Modals

Auxiliary verbs used to express ability, possibility, permission, or obligation.

Should

A modal verb used to make suggestions or give advice about present actions.

Could

A modal verb used to suggest possible actions or give advice about past actions.

Could have

A modal phrase used to discuss actions that were possible in the past but did not happen.

Should have

A modal phrase used to indicate advice that was applicable in the past but not followed.

Negative form of modals

Using modals in negative form to give advice or suggestions (e.g. shouldn't, couldn't).

Examples of giving advice

Phrases like 'You’d better…', 'You ought to…', and 'If I were you…' are used to give advice.
