Plucking is
Meltwater in the glacier freezes onto rocks and as the ice moves forwards it plucks or pulls out large pieces of rocks
Glacial Abrasion is
When rock is frozen to the base the back of glacier scrapes at the bedrock and act like sandpaper which erodes the bedrock
How did glaciers move
• snow builds up
• snow compacts into ice
• ice flows down mountainsides
• pressure at the bottom creates meltwater
• erode valley floor
Glacial deposition
Glaciers leaving behind glacial till as they move and melt.
Deposition features caused by glaciers
• moraines
• drumlins
• erratics
How is a corrie formed
Plucking and freeze thaw weathering
How are arêtes formed
When two corries form side by side separating two glaciers
Pyramidal peak
Three or more corries form in hollows on all sides of a mountain
How do glaciers affect upland river valleys
V shaped valleys to U shaped volleys through plucking and abrasion
Economic activities in glaciated upland areas
• quarrying
•farming (animals)
•forestry
•tourism
Land use conflicts in glaciated upland areas
• Reservoirs
• wind turbines
• hunting
• forestry
