heroin

A synthetic and highly potent opioid that has been responsible for many deaths.

The name of a large class of drugs that affect the endogenous opioid system. They are analgesic, addictive, and can cause overdose and death.

A drug manufactured under the name OxyContin that is a time-released pain killer. It has also been misused and overly prescribed, leading to a spike in opioid addiction and overdose.

Our own neurotransmitter system that uses opioids neurotransmitters. It is a system involved in pain regulation.
