Electronegativity (EN)
The ability of an element to attract valence electrons.
Periodic Trends in Electronegativity
Electronegativity increases across a period and decreases down a group.
Cations
Positively charged ions that are named after the element.
Anions
Negatively charged ions where the ending is changed to 'ide'.
Isoelectronic
Having the same electron configuration as a noble gas.
Ionization Energy (IE)
The energy required to remove an electron from an atom.
Main Group Metals
Metals in Groups IA, IIA, and IIIA that tend to lose electrons to form positive ions.
Group IA
Alkali metals, known for easily forming +1 ions due to low ionization energy.
Group IIA
Alkaline earth metals, typically harder and less reactive compared to Group IA.
Group IIIA
Includes elements like Aluminum, which have slightly higher ionization energy than Groups IA and IIA.
Group VI A Nonmetals
Tend to gain electrons to form negatively charged ions.
Group VII A Nonmetals
Tend to gain electrons to achieve a noble gas configuration.
Transition Metals
Elements that can form more than one type of ion, commonly losing different numbers of electrons.
