What are the 2 types of pigments?

Chlorophyll & Carotenoids

  • Help form the light harvesting system

  • Carotenoids surround primary pigment & absorbs similar & diff. wavelengths of light to chlorophyll

What colours do chlorophyll absorb and reflect?

Chlorophyll absorbs mainly red & blue light

Reflects green

Why is it important to have different photosynthetic pigments?

  • Light is absorbed by diff. complexes of the pigments

    • Expands the range of wavelengths of light that can be absorbed for photosynthesis

    • Thylakoid membrane system provides large no. of pigment molecules in an arrangement that ensures as much light as necessary is absorbed

New cards

Photosystems

Light harvesting clusters containing pigment molecules arranged in funnel-like structures (each pigment molecules passes energy down to next until reaches chlorophyll (primary pigment) reaction centre

  • Embedded in thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts (as well as other proteins)

Role of light harvesting system

To absorb light energy of different wavelengths & transfer this quickly & efficiently to the reaction centre (chlorophyll)
