Catullus poem 50 (poetry and friendship)

hesterno, Licini, die otiosi multum lusimus in meis tabellis,

Yesterday at leisure we amused ourselves a lot with my writing tablets

ut convenerat esse delicatos;

as we had agreed to be frivolous;

scribens versiculos uterque nostrum lubebat numero modo how modo illoc

each of us writing short verses was playing now in this metre, now in that,

reddens mutua per iocum atque vinum.

exchanging ideas through jokes and wine.

atque illinc abii tuo lepore incensus, Licini, facetiisque

And I went away from there Licinius inflamed by your charm and cleverness,

ut nec me miserunt cibus iuvaret nec somnus tegeret quiete ocellos,

so that food did not please wretched me nor did sleep cover my eyes with slumber

sed tot indomitus furore lecto versarer,

but wild with excitment I tossed and turned on the whole bed

cupiens videre lucem, ut tecum loquerer simulque ut essem.

desiring to see the day so that I could speak with you and so that I could be with you.

at defessa labore membra postquam simimortua lectulo iacebant

But after my limbs worn out with fatigue were lying half dead on the bed

hoc, iucunde, tibi poema feci, ex quo perspiceres meum dolorem.

I made this poem for you dear friend from which you can note my feelings.

nunc audax cave sis, precesque nostras,

Now be careful not to be arrogant and be careful not to reject my requests

oramus, cave despuas, ocelle, ne poenas Nemesis reposcat a te.

dear friend so that Nemesis does not demand retribution in return from you.

est vehemens dea.

The goddess is powerful.
