self-tapping screws
Used for joining thin sheet metal.
A pilot hole is drilled through the metal parts to be joined
Has a course thread made form hardened steel
When it is screwed into the pilot hole it cut is own thread which holds it in place
Used on products in which parts need to be removed for maintenance (computers,white goods) also used on polymer products (electronic children’s toys where battery compartments must be secured with a screw for safety)

machine screws
These screws are used to fasten thicker metal parts, sometimes used with nuts. Typically machine parts such as inspection covers on motor or gear housings, or parts that need to be removed for maintenance.
