1922 election for conservatives

• held after leading conservatives had forces an end to the post war coalition , resulted in a clear conservative victory

the decline of the liberals

• the election underlined the continuing decline of the liberal party but particulary the strength of the vote towards labour

• although there were two brief labour governments in 1923-4 and again in 1929, on oth occasions they were minority governments

• they were also dependent on support from other parties and therefore never having a free hand to push through their own policies

reason for conservative dominance during the 1920s

• previous liberal voters tended to move to the conservatives rather than to labour

• the effective conservative party organisation pulled in many of the new enfranchised voters

• the conservatives had the press behind them
