How was Plymouth started?

It was started by Puritans when Pilgrims came at the time of James the 1st. Later Massachusetts Bay Puritans came at the time of Charles the 1st.

Who were the Mass Bay Puratins?

A religion that was set up to separate themselves from the traditional church of England. Some people were from Holland and the Dutch treated them well but the English wanted to raise their children among other english.

A ship packed with people of all ages and gender with a mix of animals that brought them to Plymouth from the Old World.

The original destination was Jamestown but the ship went off course and in September of 1607 they settled on the first land they saw.

A prearranged agreement signed by men 21+ that they decided to put together as a colony stating everyone must submit to the will of the majority as they were afraid some decisions may not favor everyone.

What is a good description of Puritans?

They did not tolerate any religion other than their own (hypocritical) and wore colorful clothes. Men smoke and drink in moderation and they were very against pre-marital sex.

It was the same people from Plymouth. Boston had a natural Harbor and causes this to become a major city (one of the largest) and most important in the colonial era.

Roger Williams, a preacher from Boston, believed that Indians were = to the English and was told to stop preaching this.

What happened when Roger Williams was removed as preacher and arrested?

Indians freed him and he set up the Colony of Rhode Island (providence being its Capital). He let people practice any faith and this was a successful colony.

They were Puritan colonies that split from Mass. Bay. Not because of a dispute but because it just spread out.

It was strictly for Catholics (The 1st catholic colony) and was given to Lord Baltimore (Cecil Calvert).

What act was passed allowed all Christian faiths to be practices in Maryland?

The 1649 Toleration Act. It allowed non-Christians such as Jewish doctors and lawyers to stay if they contributed. They were not as tolerant as Rhode Island.

It was originally one colony that spit into two (North and South). In South Carolina the port in Charleston became wealthy and one of the most prominent cities in the South.

Rice, it made many people wealthy who lived in Charleston.

Indigo. The English saw the Indians using it as a blue dye. It grew well in most southern colonies and was known as “Royal Blue” in Europe.

William Penn Quaker Society ( A branch of Christianity). They were peaceful and didn’t kill unless it was self defense. Penn allows any Christian faith to be practiced and had good relations with the Indians. Attempted to purchase land instead of obtaining it by force.

James Oglethorpe. He starts a colony in the new world for debtors and it is named after King George.

What were the rules in the Georgia Colony?

50 Acres of land max per person. No slaves and no alcohol. Work is Monday-Saturday. They had to plow fields, clear land, slash/burn. Ogle is given bad feedback on the colony and quits. After this it becomes a plantation colony.

What happened in Williamsburg Virginia?

Governor sends a notice that France has built a fort on English soil (Fort Duquesne). The English governor sends George Washington as Captain Washington, Virginia Colonial Malitia.

Washington gets surrounded and is told not to fight them anymore(he surrenders on July 4 1754) He gets demoted by the governor.

Washington was promoted to Major in the malitia. Braddock asks Washington to lead him into the fort and Washington agrees. Upon arrival the British are scared of the Indians.
