Multiple Alleles
A gene that has more than two alleles, which controls traits such as blood type.
Blood Type A
Characterized by the presence of antigen I^A on the surface of red blood cells.
Blood Type B
Characterized by the presence of antigen I^B on the surface of red blood cells.
Blood Type AB
A blood type that has both antigens I^A and I^B on the surface of red blood cells.
Blood Type O
A blood type that has no antigens on the surface of red blood cells.
Sex-linked Traits
Traits that are associated with genes located on the sex chromosomes (X and Y).
Carrier
A person who has one recessive and one dominant allele for a trait, potentially passing on the recessive allele.
Pedigrees
Diagrams used by geneticists to track the inheritance of traits across generations in families.
Mutations
Changes in DNA that can cause genetic disorders.
XY
The chromosomal combination that determines male gender.
XX
The chromosomal combination that determines female gender.
