αὐτὰρ ἐγὼ δίχα πάντας ἐϋκνήμιδας ἑταίρους ἠρίθμεον,

Now I divided into two all my well-greaved companions,

ἀρχὸν δὲ μετ ̓ ἀμφοτέροισιν ὄπασσα:

and among both I assigned a leader:

τῶν μὲν ἐγὼν ἄρχον, τῶν δ ̓ Εὐρύλοχος θεοειδής.

of the one group, I was leading, of the other, the godlike Eurylochus.

κλήρους δ ̓ ἐν κυνέῃ χαλκήρεϊ πάλλομεν ὦκα:

And we shook lots quickly in a bronze helmet:

ἐκ δ ̓ ἔθορε κλῆρος μεγαλήτορος Εὐρυλόχοιο.

and the lot of great-hearted Eurylochus leapt out.

βῆ δ ̓ ἰέναι, ἅμα τῷ γε δύω καὶ εἴκοσ ̓ ἑταῖροι κλαίοντες:

And he made to go, together with him at any rate two and twenty companions, who were weeping:

κατὰ δ ̓ ἄμμε λίπον γοόωντας ὄπισθεν.

and they left us behind, wailing.

εὗρον δ ̓ ἐν βήσσῃσι τετυγμένα δώματα Κίρκης ξεστοῖσιν λάεσσι, περισκέπτῳ ἐνὶ χώρῳ:

And they found in the forest the house of Circe, built with polished stones in a visible place;

ἀμφὶ δέ μιν λύκοι ἦσαν ὀρέστεροι ἠδὲ λέοντες,

and around it there were mountain-dwelling wolves and lions,

τοὺς αὐτὴ κατέθελξεν, ἐπεὶ κακὰ φάρμακ ̓ ἔδωκεν.

which she herself enchanted when she gave them evil drugs.

οὐδ ̓ οἵ γ ̓ ὡρμήθησαν ἐπ ̓ ἀνδράσιν, ἀλλ ̓ ἄρα τοί γε οὐρῇσιν μακρῇσι περισσαίνοντες ἀνέσταν.

And they at any rate did not rush at the men, but actually even stood up wagging their long tails.

ὡς δ ̓ ὅτ ̓ ἂν ἀμφὶ ἄνακτα κύνες δαίτηθεν ἰόντα σαίνωσ ̓,

Just as when dogs fawn around their master when he comes home from a feast,

αἰεὶ γάρ τε φέρει μειλίγματα θυμοῦ,

for he always brings pleasing things for their spirit,

ὣς τοὺς ἀμφὶ λύκοι κρατερώνυχες ἠδὲ λέοντες σαῖνον:

in this way strong-clawed wolves and lions were fawning around them:

τοὶ δ ̓ ἔδεισαν, ἐπεὶ ἴδον αἰνὰ πέλωρα.

and they were afraid, when they saw the terrible monsters.
