Old Testament
contains the Law, History, Poetry/Wisdom, and Prophets.
Pentateuch
The first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
Law (Old Testament)
The first major section of the Old Testament; also referred to as the Pentateuch or Torah.
Historical Books (Old Testament)
Narrative books that recount the history of Israel, including the Conquest of Canaan, the United Monarchy, and the Division of Kingdoms.
Poetry/Wisdom Literature
Books like Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs, dealing with themes such as suffering, worship, wisdom, and the meaning of life.
Prophets
books containing messages of judgment, exile, restoration, and messianic hope.
Major Prophets
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel
Minor Prophets
Hosea through Malachi -- shorter prophetic books; focus on Amos, Micah, Jonah, and Malachi.
Exodus
A major historical event where the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt.
United Monarchy
The period when Israel was united under the rule of kings Saul, David, and Solomon.
Babylonian Exile
The period when Judah was taken captive and exiled to Babylon; had a significant impact on theology and identity.
Messianic Hope
The expectation of a future king or deliverer; prominent theme in the prophets.
The Shema
Deuteronomy 6; foundational to Israel’s faith.
