Agricultural Revolution
The transformation of human societies from hunting and gathering to farming. negatively impacted the Native Americans and led to changes in the development of civilization.
Protestant Reformation
A 16th-century religious, political, intellectual and cultural upheaval that splintered Catholic Europe, setting in place the structures and beliefs that would define the continent in the modern era.
American Colonization
The establishment of colonies in America by European powers, including Spain, England, France, and the Netherlands.
Encomienda System
A Spanish labor system that rewarded conquerors with the labor of particular groups of conquered non-Christian people. Had significant effects on both the Spanish and American Indians.
War of 1812
A conflict between the United States and Great Britain over trade restrictions and impressment of American sailors. Had effects on both the US and Britain.
Checks and Balances
A system of government where different branches have the power to limit the actions of other branches. Has both positive and negative results.
Civil War North vs. South
The conflict between the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South) in the United States. North won due to industrial capacity, resources, population, and leadership.
Compromise of 1850
A series of laws passed in 1850 that attempted to resolve disputes over slavery in new territories. Had both necessary aims and effects.
Border States
Slave states that did not secede from the Union during the Civil War (Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri). Their loyalty was crucial to the Union.
Cotton Kingdom
The term for the Southern states where cotton production dominated the economy. This was due to climate, fertile soil, and the institution of slavery.
Louisiana Purchase
The acquisition of the Louisiana territory by the United States from France in 1803. It was important for expanding US territory and control of the Mississippi River.
