Denial
a person escaping pain by rejecting reality. (example: an addict denying they have an addiction)
displacement
an individual redirecting their emotions to another. (example: you get bullied at school so you go home and take it out on your sibling.)
Intellectualization
focusing on facts and overanalyzing a situation to avoid dealing with their feelings. (example: losing a family member but starts thinking about planning a funeral instead of grieving.)
Repression
a mechanism where people exclude memories from their consciousness.
Projection
an individual putting their own insecurities or thoughts onto someone else to avoid confronting them internally.
Overcompensation
an individual developing an extreme behavior to hide their insecurities.
Regression
a mechanism that involves a person acting like a child
Reaction Formation
a person unconsciously replaces an emotion they're feeling with its opposite (example: a kid teasing someone they secretly have a crush on.)
Rationalization
creating "logical" or socially acceptable excuses for behaviors or thoughts that are illogical, unacceptable, or irrational.
sublimation (defense mechanism)
a mature coping mechanism that redirects their emotions into socially acceptable and constructive behaviors. (example: you're mad so you work out to blow off steam.)
