Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
Employed young men on federal land projects such as reforestation, restoring historic battlefields, and the Blue Ridge Parkway
- Paid little but the young men were happy to have jobs
Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA)
Gave grants to states to support relief programs.
Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA)
Paid subsidies to encourage farmers to produce less and also paid farmers to retire acreage under cultivation in basic crops
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)
- Hired thousands of people in poor region to build dams and operate power plants
- Provided thousands with electricity sold at rates well below private power companies
National Recovery Administration (NRA)
Helped each industry (Steel, coal, etc.) set codes for wages, hours of work, levels of production, and prices for furnished goods - “Codes of Practice”
- Gave workers the right to organize and bargain collectively
Public Works Administration (PWA)
Gave money to state and local governments to build roads, bridges, dams, and other public works projects.
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)
Created by the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933
- Guaranteed individual bank deposits up to $5000
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
Created to regulate the stock market to prevent future stock market crashes
Indian Reorganization Act (Wheeler-Howard Act of 1934)
- Repealed the Dawes Severalty Act of 1887 which was forced assimilation
- Restored tribal ownership of lands, recognized tribal constitutions and governments, and provided loans for economic development
- Supported the preservation of Native American Culture
Works Progress Administration (WPA)
- Federal government put people to work constructing bridges, roads, airports, etc. (Also hired unemployed artists, writers, and actors)
Social Security Act
Retirement plan for workers over 65, as well as provided unemployment and disability insurance
National Labor Relations (Wagner) Act
- Replaced the labor provisions (organize and bargain collectively) of the National Recovery Administration after that program was declared unconstitutional in Schechter Poultry v. United States (1935)
Fair Labor Standards Act
- Last major reform of the New Deal
- Established a minimum wage
- A maximum workweek of 40 hrs and time and a half for overtime
- Child-labor restrictions on those under 16
