Predestination

Purdah
The practice in some Asian societies of separating women from men or requiring women to cover themselves in public.
Mughal Dynasty
A Muslim empire that ruled much of India from the 1500s to the 1700s, known for cultural blending, strong rulers, and great architecture.

Devishirme
A system used by the Ottoman Empire where Christian boys were taken, converted to Islam, and trained for military or government service.
Hagia Sophia
A massive, historic building in Istanbul that has served as a church, a mosque, and a museum; known for its huge dome and architectural importance.
Janissaries
Elite Ottoman soldiers made up mostly of boys recruited through the devshirme who became loyal, highly trained warriors.
Reconquista
A long effort by Christian kingdoms in Spain to reclaim land from Muslim rulers, ending in 1492.
