Biome
A large area of the Earth that is home to plant and animal communities with common characteristics, which are adapted to that environment (E.g. desert or forest)
Terrestrial Biomes
Biomes found on land.
Aquatic Biomes
Biomes found in water.
Tropical Rainforest
Hot and humid, heavy rainfall year-round. Home to monkeys, jaguars, parrots, frogs, insects, tall trees, ferns, orchids, and vines. Found near the equator in areas like the Amazon Rainforest, Congo Rainforest, and Southeast Asia.
Temperate Forest
Four seasons (hot summers, cold winters), moderate rainfall. Home to deer, squirrels, bears, owls, foxes, oak, maple, birch trees, ferns, and wildflowers. Found in Eastern North America, Europe, and East Asia.
Grassland (Savanna/Prairie)
Warm summers, cool winters, moderate to low rainfall. Home to lions, zebras, elephants (savanna), bison, prairie dogs (prairie), tall grasses, and scattered trees (savanna). Found in Africa (Serengeti), South America, Australia, India (savanna), North America (USA, Canada), Argentina (Pampas), and Russia (Steppes) (prairie).
Desert
Hot days, cold nights, very little rainfall. Home to camels, lizards, snakes, scorpions, cacti, succulents, and small shrubs. Hot deserts are located in Sahara, Arabian Desert, Australian Outback, and Mojave. Cold Deserts are located in Gobi Desert and Patagonian Desert.
Tundra
Extremely cold, little rainfall, permafrost (frozen ground). Home to polar bears, arctic foxes, reindeer, snow owls, mosses, lichens, small shrubs, and short grasses. Located in the Arctic (Canada, Russia, Greenland, Alaska, Scandinavia) and on some high mountains.
Taiga (Boreal Forest)
Cold winters, mild summers, moderate rainfall. Home to moose, wolves, bears, foxes, beavers, pine trees, spruce, fir trees, and mosses. Located in Northern parts of North America, Europe, and Asia.
Freshwater Biome
Varies depending on location. Contains fish (trout, catfish), frogs, turtles, ducks, water lilies, algae, and reeds. Found worldwide in rivers, lakes, ponds, and wetlands.
Marine Biome
Varies (tropical, temperate, polar regions). Contains sharks, dolphins, jellyfish, whales, fish, seaweed, coral, and phytoplankton. Located in oceans, coral reefs, and estuaries worldwide.
