Tom telling Will about Will's Birthday
"Nine on Thursdee," he remarked. "Your birthday's in five days' time." Willie didn't understand what was so particularly special about that.

'There was nothing he could do except stay with Will and go with what was happening. He hugged him when he woke and encouraged him to talk about his nightmares as much as possible.'

'After he has entered the paint shop, he had felt as if a heavy wave of sadness has suddenly been lifted from out of him. Memories of her didn't seem as painful as he had imagined.'
When Will was under the stairs and went from Willie to Will
He felt as though he was a different person lying there in the dark. He was no longer Willie. It was as if he had said goodbye to an old part of himself. Neither was he two seperate people. He was Will inside and out.

Will survived each day in a zombielike daze.

After Tom gave Will breakfast and left
″'I must be good,' he whispered urgently. 'I must be good,' and he rubbed a sore spot on his arm. He was such a bad boy.
After Will said "I must be good"
Mum said she was kinder to him than most mothers. She only gave him soft beatings.
Tom first sees Will
The boy was thin and sickly looking, pale with limp sandy hair and dull grey eyes.

It was a strange feeling working on the bicycle, like touching a part of Zach.

I can live without Zach even though I still miss him.

He could still hear her screaming and he knew that she was hitting him, but he felt numb and separated from himself.

How could anyone not want to live, thought Will, when there were so many things to live for?
