What is the importance of farming in Britain?
Farming is important in Britain because •farmers manage more than two-thirds of the land. • farmers provide most of the country's food • farming is usually the main source of their job .
Explain the difference types of farming in Britain
There are three types of farming in Britain they are Arable farming - plowing of land and growing of crops pastoral farming - leaving of land under grass for the grazing of animals.
iii. Mixed farming- crops are grown and animals are reared in the same area.
What does the best type of farming depend on
The best type of farming depends on several physical factors like climate , relief and
soils and some human factors like farm size , technology , machinery , distance from the
market and transport.
What is an Arable farm like?
The land in an arable farm is very flat and slopes gently. Most of the fields have deep and
fertile soils. These are easy to work and well drained although occasional flooding restricts the
use of land near to the river.
What are the problems for farmers in the Arable area?
The main problems for the farmers in the arable area are occasional high winds and
summer thunderstorms that can ruin the crops just before harvest time.
How does the modern agriculture method after farming?
Modern agricultural methods have brought some serious problems. The introduction of
machinery has reduced the need for the number of farm workers. The use of chemicals has
damaged the environment and wildlife habitats and plant communities have been destroyed.
How does the government help the Arable farmers?
The government and the European Union provide annual cash payments and subsidies for
the arable farmers. These come in the form of grants and loans which help the farmers to invest
in modern methods and to grow more food.
What is a Hill sheep farm like ?
Most of the hill sheep farm is made up of high fell and steep and rocky hillside. The soil is
poor and will only support rough grasses and heather. The farm has only a small area of flatter
low lying land which has deeper soils but is often wet and difficult to cultivate.
