Empire

When a state with a strong central government expands to exert control over and extract resources from peoples unlike itself in terms of language, religion, culture, or history.

Hegemony

Dominance, established and protected through force, culture, and ideology, which can be so total that it is taken as normal and even desirable.

Agency

The ability, means, and opportunity to take action to get what one wants or needs

Context

Relevant historical and cultural circumstances that affect the ways in which people behave and understand events and other people.

Legitimacy

People’s acceptance of their political system as valid, recognition of their leaders as having the right to rule, and a general acknowledgement that a government is in control of a nation and deserves formal recognition by other countries.
