Migration
The permanent or temporary movement of people from one location to another.

Immigrant
Someone who moves to a new location.

Emigrant
Someone who moves away from a location.

Internal Migration
Movement within the borders of a country.

External Migration
Movement of people from one country to another, crossing international borders.

Voluntary Migration
Movement of people to a new location by choice.

Involuntary Migration
People are compelled to move from a location. Often because of economic, political, environmental, or cultural factors.

Push Factors
A negative cause that compels someone to leave a location.

Pull Factors
A positive cause that attracts someone to a new location.

Refugee
People who are forced to leave their country for fear of prosecution or death.

Asylum Seeker
Someone seeking the right of protection in a new country.

Restrictive Migration Policy
Government laws and regulations set to limit the number and types of people allowed to enter, live or work in a country.

Expansive Migration Policy
Government laws and regulations set to encourage and increase inward movement (immigration) of people into a country.

Economic Migrant
Someone who seeks better jobs or economic opportunities abroad, and is often fleeing persecution.
UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)
The main organization working to address migration on an international level that provides aid and advocates for millions of refugees across the world.
Amnesty International
An organization dedicated to researching, campaigning for, and protecting human rights globally.
