What is ASL?
Asl is a visual language that uses hand movements and facial expressions to communicate.
Does ASL follow the same rules as the english language?
No it does not. Asl has it’s own grammatical structure and rules that differ significantly from the English language.
What is the manual alphabet?
The manual alphabet is a system of hand signs used to represent letters of the alphabet in sign language.
What is finger spelling?
Finger spelling is a basic skill of ASL and is used for names, places, and words yyou don’t know how to sign.
Which is better when finger spelling, Speed or Clarity
Clarity is more important than speed when you finger spelling.
Can you finger spell and ENTIRE conversation?
No it is not okay to finger spell an entire conversation.
Where do I put my arms when I use sign language?
You should put your arms in a comfortable position so you can be relaxed and not have any discomfort.
Should I move my hands however I want?
No you should keep your armsand hands within a controlled space to ensure clarity and understanding in your signs.
Can I say the signs I do out loud?
No you should not say the signs out loud as it can be distracting and disrupt communication.
So does that mean I block my mouth while signing?
No you shoulsd always keep your mouth seen while you sign to enhance clarity and expression.
Which hand do I sign with?
You should sign with your DOMMINANT HAND so you can have clear accuracy.
Are eyebrows important when you sign?
Eyebrows are important because it indicates what kind of question you are asking.

Eyebrows go up for yes or no questions
What way do your eyebrows go when you ask a WH (who,what,where,why) question?
Eyebrows go down when you ask a WH question
Are the questions with WH reordered?
When you sign a WH question, the question typically goes at the end like “your name what?”
How many parameters does ASL have?
ASL has five parameters to convey meaning.
What are the five parameters?
Handshape, Movement, Palm Orientation, Location, and Non Manual Markers.
What happens if I change a parameter?
If you change a parameter, you change the whole meaning of the sign.
How do you get a deaf persons attention?
There are four ways to get a deaf persons attention. Tap them on the shoulder, Flicker a light switch, Wave, and Stomp your foot or tap on a table.
