Principles of Design
Guidelines that artists use to organize the elements of art, including balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity.
Line
An element of art defined by a point moving in space, which can be two or three-dimensional, descriptive, implied, or abstract.
Shape
An element of art that is two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width.
Colour
An element of art made up of three properties:hue, value, and intensity.
Hue
A color or shade.
Value
How light or dark a hue is.
Intensity
The brightness or dullness of a color.
Space
An element of art by which positive and negative areas are defined or a sense of depth is achieved in a work of art.
Texture
An element of art that refers to the way things feel or look as if they might feel when touched.
Subjective Frame
Relates to personal response to an artwork, including the audience's feelings or the artist's intentions.
Structural Frame
Relates to the way an artist structures the elements of art to create their artwork, including materials and techniques used.
Cultural Frame
Considers an artist's social and cultural environment and how it affects their artwork, including religion, politics, and ethnicity.
Postmodern Frame
Considers how artworks challenge traditions and conventions, often using new and non-traditional materials and technology.
