Distance
Total length of the path travelled; scalar quantity.
Displacement
Change in position; vector quantity; final position minus initial position.
Speed
Rate of motion; distance travelled per unit time; scalar.
Velocity
Speed with a direction; rate of change of position; vector.
Acceleration
Rate of change of velocity over time; can be positive or negative.
One-dimensional motion (1D)
Motion along a straight line; position described by a single coordinate.
Positive direction
Arbitrary convention indicating the positive side of the chosen axis.
Distance vs displacement
Distance is the path length travelled (scalar); displacement is the straight-line change in position (vector).
Change in a quantity
Final value minus initial value.
Rate of change
Change in a quantity divided by the time interval.
Quantity
A measurable magnitude; can be scalar or vector (e.g., distance, time, velocity).
SI base units
Fundamental units of the SI system (meter, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, candela, mole).
Meter
SI unit of length; symbol m.
Kilogram
SI unit of mass; symbol kg.
Second
SI unit of time; symbol s.
System of units
Different sets of units used in practice, e.g., SI (metric), CGS, US customary.
