“ nature tidily plotted in little squares”
‘tidily’ (adverb) - contrasts to her life. ‘tidily’ connotes order and her life was messy which link to freedom
‘little’ (adjective) -contrasts to her life → she was brought up in a wood =big scale
‘squares’ (noun) - the city is trying to control nature into small squares → nature is meant to be free and wild
‘plotted’ (verb) - indicates it is planned by humans, like a battle in which you plot to kill the enemy. The repetition of “tidily plotted” later in the poem emphasises the fact that it is unnatural.
“ the smell of work, glue factories maybe”
‘glue’ (noun) - symbolises horses as glue used to be made from horses body parts, horses link to nature and her up bringing. Glue also symbolises bringing people together - sticking things together, a feeling of togetherness

‘battered’ (adjective) - neglect and poverty and corruption, shows education negatively
‘behind which violets grow’ - juxtaposition with the first 2 words suggests beauty and resilience in harsh conditions. 'Spring and Winter' symbolise contrasting states of mind, representing hope and despair.

‘violets grow’ - show that nature is more powerful.
