“ nature tidily plotted in little squares”

  • ‘tidily’ (adverb) - contrasts to her life. ‘tidily’ connotes order and her life was messy which link to freedom

  • ‘little’ (adjective) -contrasts to her life → she was brought up in a wood =big scale

  • ‘squares’ (noun) - the city is trying to control nature into small squares → nature is meant to be free and wild

  • ‘plotted’ (verb) - indicates it is planned by humans, like a battle in which you plot to kill the enemy. The repetition of “tidily plotted” later in the poem emphasises the fact that it is unnatural.

‘glue’ (noun) - symbolises horses as glue used to be made from horses body parts, horses link to nature and her up bringing. Glue also symbolises bringing people together - sticking things together, a feeling of togetherness
