The blues music enhances the dreamlike feeling in the play.
The blue piano represents ‘the spirit of life’(pg3) in the setting.
When the blues piano is heard:
•prominent in scene 1 when Blanche recalls unfortunate fate of Belle Rev
•Scene 5 when she kisses the young man
•The blue piano is the loudest when Blanche is sent away to the asylum in last scene.
The blue piano shows the cyclical structure of the play, the play starts and ends with the same background music. This shows how Blanche ,just like in the beginning of the play, is alone and continues her unsettled journey for life.
The blue piano not only gives the readers a sense of setting, but also shows Blanche’s need for companionship.
(The distant piano goes into a hectic breakdown)
Symbolic of Stanley’s destruction of Blanche’s fake, self-curated reality by exposing her past.
