Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
The energy required for involuntary activities of the body in a resting condition.
Physical Activity
The amount of energy required by the skeletal muscles for body movement.
Thermic Effect of Feeding (TEF)
The amount of energy required to digest and metabolize food.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
A measure of an individual's body fat based on height and weight.
Factors Increasing BMR
Higher in males, taller individuals, during growth periods, pregnancy, increased muscle mass, fever, hyperthyroidism, extreme temperatures, and caffeine.
Factors Decreasing BMR
Lower in females, shorter individuals, increased age, reduced muscle mass, hypothyroidism, fasting, and malnutrition.
BMI Calculating Formula
Weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
Underweight BMI Range
A BMI less than or equal to 18.4.
Healthy Weight BMI Range
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9.
Overweight BMI Range
A BMI between 25 and 29.9.
Obese BMI Range
A BMI greater than or equal to 30.
