NRC
Noise Reduction Coefficient: the measure of sound absorbed by a material.
Plenum
The space between a suspended ceiling and the floor above.
STC
Sound Transmission Class: a single number rating that is used to characterize the sound-insulating value of a partition (wall or ceiling).
Laminated Beam
Several pieces of lumber are glued to form a structural timber.
Gypsum Board Installation Difficulty
The main difficulty with installing gypsum board for ceilings is the board’s weight.
Gypsum Board Ceiling Panel Design
Ceiling panels are 1/2″ thick and are specially designed to resist sagging; they are equal to a 5/8″ wallboard, installed perpendicular to framing.
