Great Depression
A period lasting from 1929 to 1941 in which the U.S. economy faltered and unemployment soared.
Speculation
The act of buying stocks at great risk with the anticipation that the prices will rise.
Banks Runs
Persistent and heavy demands by a bank’s depositors, creditors, or customers to withdraw money.
Black Tuesday
October 29, 1929, when stock prices fell sharply in the Great Crash.
Federal Reserve System
The central banking system of the United States that regulates the amount of money in circulation.
Monetary Policy
Strategy taken by a central banking system to regulate the supply of money.
Tariffs
A tax to be paid on a particular class of imports or exports.
Deportation
The forced removal of someone from a country.
Repatriation
The process by which government officials return persons to their country of origin.
Dust Bowl
Term used for the central and southern Great Plains during the 1930s, when the region suffered from drought and dust storms.
New Deal
Programs and legislation pushed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression to promote economic recovery and social reform.
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)
Provides government insurance for bank deposits.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
Created to regulate the stock market and stop fraud.
Social Security Administration
Sets up a pension system for retirees and established unemployment insurance.
Court-Packing Plan
President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s plan to add six new justices to the nine-member Supreme Court.
