Values
The principles or standards of behavior that are considered important in a culture.
Peer Pressure
Influence from members of one's peer group to engage in certain behaviors, such as drinking or drug use.
Mass Media
Forms of communication that reach large audiences, including television, internet, radio, books, and magazines.
Norms
Standards for acceptable behavior set by groups; can vary by culture, location, and time.
Folkways
The mildest types of norms; everyday manners and behaviors that are expected in social situations.
Mores
Stronger norms based on moral values that produce strong reactions when violated.
Laws
Formal norms with established consequences for violations; these can vary in severity.
Taboos
Strong prohibitions against behaviors that are considered completely forbidden and result in severe consequences.
Deviance
Behavior that differs from societal norms; can be context-dependent and relative.
Labeling Theory
A theory that suggests a behavior is viewed as deviant only when it is labeled as such by society.
Strain Theory
A theory that posits individuals may turn to deviance when they are blocked from achieving culturally accepted goals.
Collective Behavior
Behavior that is not in line with societal norms occurring when large numbers of individuals act together.
Fad
A fleeting behavior that gains rapid popularity but fades quickly.
Mass Hysteria
A phenomenon where large groups experience panic or irrational behavior in response to real or perceived threats.
Riots
Chaotic acts by large groups resulting in vandalism, violence, or other illegal actions, often due to a perceived injustice.
