Present simple
facts, habits, regular occurences
Present continuous
Things happening right now, trends, future arrangements
Past simple
actions that are fully finished, habits/facts in the past
Past continuous
interrupted actions in the past, repeated actions in the past, something that happened before and after a specific time
Present perfect
activities that happened and are still happening, when you say something about the past with an influence on the present (I have never liked fish)
Present perfect continuous
have/has been -ing, Unfinished actions, temproary/unusual situations
Past perfect
A finished action before a certain point in the past (by the time we arrived, the train had left), Past explanations (i had already eaten)
Past perfect continuous
Had been -ing, Ongoing actions leading up to a recent past event (They had been walking for hours when they arrived), Background information (she was tired because she had not been sleeping), Emphasizing the duration of an activity (we had been walking for days)
future continuous
will be -ing, with a future time expression, to state that at a specific point in the future, there will be an action in progress and for a fixed future action (he will be biking)
future perfect
will have + past participle, To talk about a finished action in the future (I will have already eaten dinner)
future perfect continuous
will have been -ing, To talk about actions that will continue up to a particular time in the future (how long will you have been playing volleyball next year?)
Will + infinitive
Promises/hopes for the future, Predictions, future uncertain predictions (with ‘probably’), Decisions made at the moment of speaking
going to + infinitive
Intentions and plans in the future, Predictions based on things we can see in the present (evidence)
