Spontaneous process
a reactiont that happens on it’s own without any outside interference
higher entropy is favored because
it gives the universe more options
positive delta S means that
a reaction is spontaneous
Second Law of thermodynamics
In any spontaneous process there is an increase in the entropy of the universe
entropy of the system and entropy of he surroundings equals
entropy of the universe
If delta S of the universe is positive
the process is spontaneous
if delta S of the universe is negative
the reverse of the reaction is spontaneous
Gibbs Energy
an equation used to find the spontaneity of a reaction using temperature, entropy, and enthalpy
Derive the equation for delta G
OK
If delta G is positive
the reaction is non spontaneous
if delta G is negative
the reaction is spontaneous
delta h/ delta s is
the pivot point since it is equal to temperature
T =
delta H/ Delta S
If Delta G is zero
the reaction is reversible
Delta G of Rxn
(stoic)product - (Stoic)reactants
Delta G wants to be
negative because it gives the universe mor entropy and more options, making it spontaneous
