Who were barber surgeons?

Poorly trained people (often with no training at all) who could cut hair, pull out teeth and perform small operations such as amputations

What was an apothecary?

Shop owners with little to no training, but sold medicines and potions, many of which were based on generations of knowledge being passed down

Who were wise women?

Women whose treatments relied on superstition, however they also had extensive knowledge of plants and herbs

Who were quacks?

Showy travelling salesmen who sold medicines and cure-alls

What were common at home remedies?

Honey can kill bacteria, willow tree bark contains aspirin to dull pain, opium was also brought back by explorers which acted as an anaesthetic, and limes were used to cure scurvy
