Aim
To see what factors would decrease the level of acculturative stress for asian immigrants in the USA
Sample
2095 immigrant (1271-> 1st gen chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino; rest born in USA)
Procedure
- semi-structured interview conducted either face to face or over internet (interviewer had similar linguistic cultural background)
- random selection after interviews to verify data
- Qs measure accul stress, language preferences and prfiency, descrimination, social networks, famil cohesion, SES
Findings
Predictors of lower acculturative stress: bilingual, sharing values with one's family, economically satisfied
Predictor of higher acculturative stress: preference for only speaking english, negative treatment
