Aging
A complex biological process of growing older, best defined by functionality, independence, and biological/health status.
Elderly
Individuals generally aged 65 years and older.
Primary Aging
Normal changes that occur as a natural consequence of physical aging, such as graying hair and deterioration of vision.
Secondary Aging
Common disease conditions or diagnoses associated with adulthood or aging, including arthritis and dementia.
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
Routine tasks individuals need to perform for self-care, often limited in the elderly.
Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs)
More complex tasks than basic self-care, including managing finances and meal preparation.
Presbycusis
Age-related hearing loss characterized by difficulty in hearing high frequencies and social situations.
Presbyopia
Age-related loss of the eyes' ability to focus actively on nearby objects.
Presbyphonia
Age-related changes to the voice resulting in diminished lung volume and slower processing speed.
Functional Assessment
The process of evaluating a patient’s physical and mental health to establish their level of daily functioning.
