Noun
a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea
Verb
a word that expresses an action or state of being.
Adverb
a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or an adverb. (where, when, how, or to what extent)
Adjective
a word that modifies or defines by describing a noun or a pronoun. (which one, how many, what kind, or how much)
Pronoun
a word used in place of a noun or a pronoun.
Preposition
a word that shows how a noun or pronoun is related to some other word in the sentence. (direction, position, or relation in time)
Conjuction
a word that connects or groups of words.
Interjection
a word or group of words that shows feeling or sudden emotion. (can stand by itself)
Common nouns
general names for people, places, and things
Proper nouns
names for specific people, places, and things. Always start with a capital.
Concrete nouns
name people, places, and things that you can see, touch, taste, hear, or smell.
Abstract nouns
name ideas, feelings, or qualities.
Collective nouns
name groups of people, places, or things.
Compound nouns
made up of two or more words. Can be common, proper, singular, plural, concrete, abstract, or collective. Can be one word, two words, or hyphenated.
Singular nouns
name only one person, place, or thing.
Plural nouns
name more than one person place, or thing.
Articles
a, an, or the, mark the presence of a noun.
Action verbs
describe activity. Can be physical or be quieter activities.
Linking verbs
describe a state of being. Connect a noun or adjective to the subject.
Helping verbs
help the main verb describe an action that happened in the past, present, or will happen in the future.

the tieing up of loose ends

time, place, situation, mood/atmosphere

could be time of day, year, century, season

what is the situation in the beginning of the story

the overall feeling you get from reading the story
