Bactericidal due to inhibition of an enzyme needed for DNA replication

Treats both gram - & + bacteria
Urinary, respiratory, GI tract infections, bone, joint, skin, soft tissue infections, pneumonia, & gonorrhea
Prevention of Anthrax if spores are inhaled
complications
GI upset:
Achilles tendon rupture
Suprainfection
Photosensitivity
contraindications
Children under 18
Use with caution in older adults who have cardiovascular
drug to drug interactions
Antacids & multivitamin/mineral supplements
Can increase serum theophylline levels
Can increase serum levels of warfarin
education
PO & IV
May need to lower dose with kidney issues
IV: administer slowly
Push PO fluids
Complete entire course of therapy
