What does Hooke’s Law define?
The relationship between the extension of an elastic object and the applied force
What does Hooke’s Law state?
The extension of an elastic object is directly proportional to the force applied, up to the limit of proportionality
What is the limit of proportionality?
The point at which if more force is added, the object may extend but will not return to its original shape when the force is removed
When does elastic deformation occur?
When objects return to their original shape when the stretching force is removed
When does inelastic deformation occur?
When objects remain stretched and do not return completely to their original shape even when the stretching force is removed
What is a moment?
The turning effect of a force about a pivot
The equation for the size of a moment
M = F * d
What does the principle of moments state?
If an object is balanced, the total clockwise moment about a pivot equals the total anticlockwise moment about that pivot
What is the centre of gravity?
The point through which the weight of an object acts
