Dehydration
is a beta elimination reaction in which the elements of OH and H are removed from the alpha and beta carbon atoms
Zaitsev’s rule
When HX is removed from a species to form an alkene, hydrogen is lost preferentially from the carbon atom that has fewer hydrogens
Techniques used in this lab:
Microscale distillation
Glassware for distillation
10 mL round bottom flask, 10 mL beaker, reflux/water cooled condenser, hickman still, 5 mL conical vial, one small test tube, and 10 mL Erlenmeyer
Other items needed
Thermometer, ring/clamp stand, hotplate/stir, aluminum block, and two water tubes for reflux/water cooled condenser
Chemicals needed:
Cyclohexanol, 85% phosphoric acid, conc. Sulfuric acid, and anhydrous sodium sulfate
