Race
A biological classification of human groups that share similar physical characteristics.
Ethnicity
Refers to people who are racially similar but have distinctive cultural characteristics.
Dominant Group
A category of people whose values, language, customs, and traditions are practiced and enforced in a society.
Minority Group
A category of people who face differential treatment due to lack of political and economic influence.
Prejudice
A positive or negative bias or attitude toward a group based on generalizations about its members.
Social Distance
The level of tolerance one has for people who are different from themselves.
Discrimination
An action that disqualifies members of a group from social opportunities.
Racism
The belief that some races are inherently superior to others.
Stereotype
An exaggerated and inaccurate mental image of a group.
Assimilation
The process of a minority group being absorbed into the larger society.
Desegregation
The elimination of spatial barriers between groups.
Institutional Discrimination
Discrimination built into societal structures that may be intentional or unintentional.
Affirmative Action
Policies requiring employers to actively seek out qualified minority candidates.
Implicit Bias
Unconscious and automatic features of prejudicial judgment toward stigmatized groups.
Expulsion
The forced removal of a minority population from their land to a less desirable location.
Scapegoat
A person or category of people wrongly blamed for the problems of others.
Genocide
The systematic murder of a population for various reasons including political or territorial.
Scientific Racism
The use of pseudo-scientific research to justify beliefs about racial superiority or inferiority.
