Erythropoiesis
The process of erythrocyte (red blood cell) production from hematopoietic stem cells.
Hemoglobin
A respiratory protein in erythrocytes responsible for oxygen and carbon dioxide transport.
Reticulocyte
An immature red blood cell that is a stage in erythrocyte maturation, characterized by a mesh-like network due to ribosomal RNA.
Erythropoietin (EPO)
A hormone produced mainly by the kidneys that regulates red blood cell production based on oxygen levels.
Maturation of Erythrocytes
The process through which stem cells differentiate into mature erythrocytes over approximately 4 to 5 days.
Megaloblastic Maturation
A defect in nuclear maturation resulting from deficiencies in vitamin B12 or folate, characterized by delayed nuclear development.
Polychromatophilic Normoblast
An immature erythrocyte stage characterized by a mix of color in the cytoplasm due to hemoglobin formation.
Anaerobic Glycolysis
The metabolic pathway used by erythrocytes for energy production, occurring without oxygen.
Polycythemia
An increased concentration of erythrocytes in the blood, which can be absolute or relative.
Calcium (PMCA) and Glycated Hemoglobin (Hgb A1C)
Indicators of aging changes in red blood cell membranes.
