Treaty of Versailles : 1919

After World War I, the winning countries (called the Allied Powers) met to decide how to punish Germany.

These leaders were called “The Big Four”:

  • David Lloyd George (Great Britain)

  • Vittorio Orlando (Italy)

  • Georges Clemenceau (France)

  • Woodrow Wilson (United States)

They made a very harsh treaty for Germany

What the Treaty Forced Germany to Do

The Treaty of Versailles punished Germany financially, militarily, and territorially, and it made Germany take the blame for the war.

This caused Germany to become very angry and weak—leading to problems later (like WWII).

🔒 Hitler in Prison

Hitler tried to overthrow the German government (a coup) in 1923.

This was treason, so he was arrested and sent to prison.

While in prison, he wrote a book called Mein Kampf (“My Struggle”).

This book explained his beliefs before he became powerful, so it helps us understand his thinking.

Summary

In Mein Kampf, Hitler revealed his racist beliefs, hatred for Jewish people, desire to destroy democracy, plans to expand Germany, and idea of a “pure” Aryan race. These ideas guided what he did once he took power.

10
New cards

Hitler used elections to gain power, was appointed Chancellor, eliminated rivals during the Night of the Long Knives, and after Hindenburg died, turned Germany into a dictatorship with himself as Führer.
