Muscle involved in respiration; originates from the xiphoid process, ribs 10-12, costal cartilages 5-9, lumbar vertebrae and is innervated by the Phrenic nerve.
Diaphragm
Muscle located between the ribs; originates from the inferior margins of ribs 1-11 and inserts at the superior margins of ribs 2-12, innervated by intercostal nerves.
External Intercostals
Muscle found between the ribs; originates from the superior margins of ribs 1-11 and inserts at the inferior margins of ribs 2-12, innervated by intercostal nerves.
Internal Intercostals
A muscle of the abdominal wall; originates from the pubis and inserts at the xiphoid process and costal cartilages 5-7, innervated by intercostal nerves 7-12.
Rectus Abdominis
Muscle located on the side of the abdomen; originates from ribs 5-12 and inserts at the xiphoid process and linea alba, innervated by intercostal nerves 8-12, iliohypogastric, and ilioinguinal nerves.
External Abdominal Oblique
Muscle forming the innermost layer of the abdominal wall; originates from the inguinal ligament, iliac crest, and thoracolumbar fascia, inserts at the xiphoid process, linea alba, and pubis, innervated by intercostal nerves 8-12, iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves.
Transversus Abdominis
Larger pectoral muscle; originates from the clavicle, sternum, costal cartilages 1-6, and the aponeurosis of the external abdominal oblique, inserts at the intertubercular groove of the humerus, innervated by the medial and lateral pectoral nerves.
Pectoralis Major
Large back muscle; originates from vertebrae T7-L5, lower three or four ribs, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, and inferior angle of scapula, inserts at the intertubercular groove of the humerus, innervated by the thoracodorsal nerve.
Latissimus Dorsi
Smaller chest muscle; originates from ribs 3-5, inserts at the coracoid process, innervated by medial and lateral pectoral nerves.
Pectoralis Minor
Muscle located on the side of the thorax; originates from ribs 1-8 or 9 (varies), inserts at the medial border of the scapula, innervated by the long thoracic nerve.
Serratus Anterior
Muscle located on the back, from the inferior angle to the lateral border of the scapula; inserts at the intertubercular groove of the humerus, innervated by the subscapular nerve.
Teres Major
Muscles connecting the scapula to the spine; involved in retracting the scapula.
Rhomboids Major and Minor
Muscle that elevates the scapula; its location is important for initial assessments.
Levator Scapula
Group of muscles on the side of the neck; important for flexing and rotating the neck.
Scalenes
Group of muscles that extend the vertebral column; important for maintaining posture.
Erector Spinae
Muscle stabilizing the spine; important for deep stabilization and movement.
