Life Table
a summary
of how survival and
reproductive rates in a
population vary with the
age of individuals (or
size, or life cycle stage).
COHORT LIFE TABLE
A life table in which the fate of
a group of individuals born
during the same time period (a
cohort) is followed from birth
to death.
Data are collected over the
lifetime of the cohort.
STATIC LIFE TABLE
A life table that records the
survival and reproduction of
individuals of different ages
during a single time period.
Data are collected all at once,
across all living cohorts.
Fitness
Survival and reproductive success
Fecundity
Number of offspring
Geometric Growth Formula
Used for populations that have discrete breeding events (e.g., a breeding season, rather than
producing offspring any time of the year)
Net Reproductive Rate (R0)
Expected average number of
offspring produced by an individual
in their lifetime.
Population Growth Rate (λ)
The change in population size over a
unit of time.
Intrinsic Rate of Increase (r)
A constant whose value is
determined by the per capita birth
rate minus the per capita death rate
at any instant in time.
