The Puritan challenge
•Issues with the Act of Uniformity – some Puritans questioned some of the decisions and did not follow them all, especially those which were too sympathetic to the Catholic cause e.g. kneeling to receive communion, organ music accompanying hymns
•Crucifix controversy – Puritans saw crucifixes as idols (symbols/images of Jesus) and believed it was wrong to worship them; Elizabeth liked them but eventually backed down and allowed priests to make their own decision - she kept one in the Royal Chapel
•Vestment controversy – Protestants were against special clothing because they did not think priests were better than ordinary people. In 1566, Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury, held a special exhibition in London to enforce special vestments – 37 of the 110 invited did not attend and lost their posts
