They wanted to create art with more substance and meaning from it, after the Rococo craze.

What is realism?

Examples of work like Caravaggio and dutch baroque. but also photography, that changed what realism was because we could capture what eyes couldn’t see. captures social issues, reality of situations versus how they had originally appeared, in the subject matter.

What was the modernization of France?

The Haussmannization of Paris, was originally overbuilt and crowded, polluted with crime filled and inhabited by poor people but then was transformed and invites the new artist to come and get new subject matter and ideas:

tear down slums, broad boulevards for transportation, shift demographic because of the industrial revolution, leaving rural communities and moving to urban sphere

center is wealth and outskirts is poor people

broad streets allow for air circulation and urban control, no more small and narrow roads. new architecture is built to house (upper middle class will live here not the poor anymore), cleaner streets with trees to beautify the city with urban lighting (helps crime), underground sewage (helps disease), center plazas and urban parks, originally owned by aristocracy so now public was allowed to roam there, they are oasis. wider sidewalks for traffic (which means new apartments), cafe culture, social gatherings now, could talk at cafes instead of just academy, no rules (like only doing rococo, etc.). this helped artists because of the incredible city walking environment, could build new modern ideas and politics.
