what is said about black pupils and discipline

  • Gillborn and Youdell- found teachers are quicker to discipline black pupils as they have racialised expectations so they misinterpret their behaviour, this then leads to further conflict

  • Bourne- the school sees black boys as a threat and labels them negatively which leads to more exclusion so their achievement is stunted

what did Wright find

  • studied a multiethnic primary school and found asian pupils are also victims of labelling

  • she found teachers hold ethno-centric views (british culture is superior)

  • the teachers would assume asian pupils had poor english and leave them out of class discussions

  • they were also marginalised- they felt their names/culture were disapproved of and were ignored by teachers due to not being a ‘threat’ like black pupils
