Temperature
a measure of how hot or cold something is compared to a reference point
Fahrenheit Scale
The measure of temperature used in the US
Celsius Scale
The measure of temperature most countries use
Kelvin Scale
The measure of temperature many scientists use, dived in kelvins not degrees, zero kelvin is the lowest temperature
absolute zero
the lowest possible temperature, zero kelvin
heat
the transfer of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object
convection
a type of heat transfer that occurs only in fluids (water and air)
convection current
the circular flow of air/liquid created due to convection
radiation
the heat transfer by electromagnetic waves
conduction
the transfer of heat from one particle of matter to anoither within an object or between two objects
conductor
A material that conducts heat well (heat can easily transfer in and out)
insulator
materials that don’t conduct hear well (opposite of conductors)
specific heat
the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg by one kelvin
thermal expansion
the expanding of matter when it is heated
