fibrous joints
stable joints with little motion
cartilaginous joints
medium stability with slight accommodatory motions available
synovial joints
movable joints with very low friction/resistance to allow segmental motion
Synovial Joints:
-ball and socket
3 DOF
Synovial joints:
-condyloid and saddle
2 DOF
Synovial Joints:
-pivot and hinge
1 DOF
While relaxed and sitting with your leg straight, what is the mobility of your patella?
easily moveable
When you knee is fully flexed, how does the mobility of the patella change?
The patella is no longer easily moveable due to the patellar retinculums pull tight and stabilize the patella. The patella is deeper in the intercondylar groove making it more stable
Open-packed (loose-packed)
all the ligaments that stabilize a joint have some slack, the joint has more “play” or laxity and can be moved the greatest amount
Closed-packed
ligaments and static stabilizing structures are at their tightest, most restrictive making the joint stable with very little play
From a position of sitting on the floor with your legs straight in front of you, perform an eccentric contraction of your iliopsoas muscle bilaterally. In what position are you now?
supine (laying down on the floor)
When you perform concentric contraction of your neck flexors from a supine position, what position are you holding?
cervical flexion
While holding your neck in a cervical flexed position, what type of contraction are you performing?
isometric
In a standing anatomic position, name the prime mover for extension of the femur at the coxofemoral joint?
gluteus maximus (agonist)
what is the antagonist for extension of the femur?
hamstring muscles (semimembranosus, semitendinosus, and biceps femoris)
-these perform flexion of the femur at the coxofemoral joint therefore making them antagonists for extension
Slowly move from a standing position to sitting in a chair and feel the contraction in the prime mover for hip extension. What function did the contraction in the prime mover (glut. max.) play during the move from standing to sitting?
Gluteus maximus contracted eccentrically to control the hip flexion while lowering the body into a sitting position
