What makes a good king for the Israelites?
Someone who has great faith in God, someone who can follow and enforce the covenant and the laws of the 10 Commandments
Saul
First king of the Israelites, led the Israelites into battle multiple times but did not fight, shied away from fighting Goliath, in old age he acts against the Lord and his law by asking a medium for guidance (breaking his own law), relies on Solomon for guidance, lacks faith in the Lord making him a weak leader, is jealous of David when David defeats Goliath
David
second king of the Israelites, strong warrior who had faith in God, committed an act of sin and repents for his sin, came close many times to killing Saul but didn’t, only became king from marrying the princess and the first born son abdicating the throne, does have faith in the Lord
Solomon
third and last king of the united Israelites, second son of Bathsheba and David, had a lot of foreign wives allowing for more trade, he built temples to polytheistic gods and goddesses, built the Temple for the Lord but also built a larger house for himself,
Samuel
prophet, son of Hannah; apprentice to Eli, a priest; warns the Israelites against having a king but they do not listen to him, orchestrates how David is able to get onto the throne,
